Crowdfunding to be considered for community projects in Charnwood

An innovative scheme to support community groups is being proposed by Charnwood Borough Council.

The Council’s Cabinet will consider a proposal to set up a scheme to encourage crowdfunding for community projects in the borough.

Projects would apply online to be involved and those who meet the criteria would be given a page on a dedicated website and marketing support to promote their project to encourage donations.

The Council has also pledged to put £24,000 towards environmental projects. The criteria for these projects will be developed if the scheme is approved.

Cabinet will consider the proposal on March 15.

Councillor Brian Page, Lead Member for Communities, Safety and Wellbeing said: “We believe crowdfunding could not only help local projects raise funds but also empower people to make a positive difference in their communities.

“It’s still a proposal at the moment, but it forms part of our long term commitment to supporting the voluntary and community sector.

“Each year we pledge around £400,000 to supporting the sector who deliver a range of services and projects for the benefit of Charnwood residents.”

The Council is looking at appointing a crowdfunding company which provides the platform to host and manage the projects, as well as legal, consultation and technical support.
