Just a couple of weeks to put forward your favourites

There are just a couple of weeks left for people to nominate individuals and places important to Leicestershire’s past who could be honoured with a county council green plaque award.

Nominations for the sixth round of the popular scheme, which recognises the impact of individuals and places have had on Leicestershire communities, will close at midnight on Monday, 23 December.

Once nominations have closed, a panel of judges will have the difficult job of shortlisting the nominations. The public will have the final vote which will decide the six nominees to be honoured with a plaque.

Nominations can cover local heroes, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, places with cultural or heritage connections, as well as buildings of historical or architectural importance. To be eligible, people nominated must have been deceased for at least 20 years and if a building is nominated, property owners should be aware and agree in principle to the nomination.

We have had a very positive response so far and have already received a number of nominations, but we don’t want people to miss out on the chance to nominate a person or place who they feel is a deserving candidate for a green plaque.

The most recent green plaques have been awarded to pioneering suffragette sisters, a First World War poet, and the illustrator of the Thomas the Tank Engine and Ladybird books. We would love to hear about even more people and places that should be recognised.

The next plaque to be unveiled will honour astronomer and one of the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society, Rev Dr William Pearson, of South Kilworth.

Nomination forms are also available by writing to Green Plaque Awards, County Hall, c/o Business Support, Room 600, Glenfield Leics LE3 8RL.
