Two sentenced in connection with Nuneaton shooting

Following a Warwickshire Police investigation, two people have today (Friday 1 March) been found guilty of offences in relation to a shooting in June last year.

Sami Alshalaly, aged 22 of Shawbury Grove, Birmingham and Leaei Tallis-Farndon, aged 27 of Marston Lane, Nuneaton (but formerly of The Green, Attleborough), both appeared at Warwick Crown Court today.
 

At around 3am on Friday 29 June, police were called to Bull Street in the Attleborough area of Nuneaton following a report of a shooting. Police were first on the scene and carried out emergency first aid.

A man in his late twenties was taken to hospital by ambulance where he later recovered after life-saving surgery.

During the trial, the court heard how Alshalaly was part of a group who operated a county-lines drug supply operation bringing drugs into Nuneaton. He enforced his will on those that either stood in his way or owed him a debt.

Tallis-Farndon became involved with Alshalaly after her relationship with the victim came to an end, and on the night of the incident, told Alshalaly where the victim would be, knowing that he would cause the victim harm. She then gave a false statement to police once the shooting had taken place.

Alshalaly was found guilty of attempted murder and possessing a firearm with intent to carry out an indictable offence in relation to the incident on 29 June, and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life in relation to a separate incident in Nuneaton in June 2018.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 17 years, for the attempted murder and seven years to run concurrently for the firearms offences.

Tallis-Farndon was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm in relation to the shooting incident and subsequently perverting the course of justice. She was sentenced to four years for the planned assault with a further two years for perverting the course of justice, to run consecutively.

A third man who was charged with attempted murder was found not guilty.

Following today's result, Detective Sergeant Sean Tonelli from Warwickshire Police said: "As a result of the quick response in saving the victim's life, securing the scene and subsequent good detective work, these individuals are now off the streets and behind bars.

"Thankfully, incidents of this nature are extremely rare within our communities but I hope this result not only acts as a deterrent to others but also goes some way to reassuring the public that we will always prioritise bringing offenders to justice where possible and protecting our communities from harm.

"This case shows the unfortunate high levels of risk that are posed by those who engage in such criminality. I would ask anyone with information about drug supply or illegal firearms within our communities to please contact the police or Crimestoppers."

Protect is a campaign being run by Warwickshire Police alongside a range of partner agencies to tackle serious and organised crime (SOC).
