2019 events planned to remember Charnwood’s war heroes

Fallen war heroes from Charnwood will be remembered at three poignant events.

The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Brenda Seaton, will place a cross in Queen’s Park’s Garden of Remembrance on Saturday November 2, during a short service to commemorate those who have lost their lives through human conflict. The service will start at 10am at the park’s New Street entrance.

On Sunday November 10, around 5,000 people will join the Remembrance Sunday Service and parade around Loughborough.

The parade, organised by the Royal British Legion, will start at 10.20am from The Market Place and includes serving and ex-service personnel from more than 25 local uniformed organisations.

The Remembrance Service will be held at the Carillon Tower; Queen’s Park, at 10.45am led by Reverend Wendy Dalrymple, Chaplain, Royal British Legion, Loughborough Branch.

The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Brenda Seaton, will lead the proceedings for Charnwood Borough Council and said: “Every year, the Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday.

“Many services and parades will take place in Charnwood where communities come together to show their respect and share the two minutes silence for those heroes that lost their lives serving their country as well as honouring veterans and those who are actively serving.

“The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal donations are used to support members of the Armed Forces. The money raised is divided into various areas of the force’s community. One of the main focuses of the funds is to help with the welfare of Armed Forces members including rehabilitation courses and career advice for people that have left the service.

“Your generosity is gratefully received by The Royal British Legion but above all giving your support and showing your respect on Remembrance Sunday lets the Armed Forces know that you appreciate what they have done for you as an individual and for our country.

“It is a great personal honour for me to represent Charnwood as Mayor and to take part in the Loughborough Remembrance Day Parade.”

In order to prevent a build-up people trying to access Queens Park through the New Street gates following the parade, the gates will be closed at 10.30am to the general public to enable the Civic Party and Community wreath layers to process into the park. It is advisable for the public to access the park through other gates on Granby Street, or Browns Lane.

Armistice Day will be commemorated on Monday November 11, with a service at 10:45am held at the Carillon Tower. At 11am the two-minute silence will be observed.
