Leicestershire police are urging residents in Charnwood to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are secure following recent burglaries in the area involving elderly victims.

A spokesperson from the force said: "detectives from Charnwood CID are investigating eight burglaries in Hathern and Loughborough where it's believed a suspect or suspects have gone into properties through doors or windows which have been left open or insecure.

The incidents happened between 26th June and 5th July."

Detective Inspector Deb Hubbard, from Charnwood CID, said elderly people are being targeted – and is asking people to check on family and friends to make sure they don’t fall victim.

She said: “We’re currently investigating a number of recent burglaries across the Charnwood Neighbourhood Policing Area. No-one was injured during any of these incidents.

“While our enquiries are continuing, I’d like to ask people living in the area – or who have family in the area – to remain vigilant.

“The recent warm weather means there is a temptation to leave doors and windows open, but this is also an opportunity for criminals to strike.

“Please speak to family and friends who you think may be at risk to ensure their homes are secure. Please encourage them to make sure doors and windows are locked where and when possible.

“Other things to consider are bins and any garden furniture – could someone use them to climb into your home? Is there any way you can restrict how far a window opens?”
