A Loughborough College lecturer has 'aced' his Maths GCSE at the age of 59 - so he can better support students who struggle in the subject.

Norman Heighton, of Coalville, was thrilled to achieve a grade 9 in Maths which he will use to help learners in his day job as a maths lecturer. He also achieved a grade 7 in English.

Norman said: “I’m well chuffed with my results. I couldn’t be happier. I feel like my hard work and determination has all paid off. I’m over the moon.

“Maths has always been my bag, so I have been supporting students to help them understand the subject. But I wanted to get better at it. That’s why I wanted to sit the qualification, so I have a better understanding of what’s new and could get better at supporting students.

“I love my job and love giving back. I want to be able to teach the kids where maths fits in with their day-to-day life. Getting this qualification will definitely help me do that.”

While studying towards the qualification Mr Heighton had to juggle being on the other side of his desk as a student - an experience he described as "bizarre”.

“The tutors were brilliant, so supportive,” he said. “They are supportive of everyone. It’s great being part of the team, but it was bizarre being taught by my colleagues. It was great fun though and hard work. I really wanted them to pile the work on me as I only had one shot at this.”

Norman, who has four daughters and five grandchildren, is now studying for a Level 3 teaching qualification at the college so he can further sharpen his skills.

He said: “It’s never too late to go back to the classroom. I left school at 16 with no qualifications. The great thing about Loughborough College is the support network, both students and staff, it’s unbelievable.”

Norman spent 25 years in the construction industry before retiring three years ago. But he discovered he wasn’t yet ready to call it a day so applied for a job in the college’s café.

His natural talent for building rapport with students and mathematics didn’t go un-noticed and he was soon invited to join the teaching staff as a learning support assistant.

“I had a really good career and retired at the age of 56 but I started thinking I’m too young to retire. Coming to Loughborough College was one of the best things I’ve done.”

Jo Maher, Principal and CEO at Loughborough College, said: “Norman’s story is inspirational. He embodies the college’s student-focused ethos and I am sure future learners will benefit from his expertise and experience. I’m delighted for him.”
