University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has been rated as 'Good' following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

It's following a series of inspections of a number of services at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital between September and November 2019.

The Trust is now rated as ‘Good’ overall as well as for being effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The rating for safety has remained at ‘Requires Improvement’.

The new rating from the CQC is an improvement on the Trust’s previous rating of ‘Requires Improvement’.

John Adler, Chief Executive of  Leicester’s Hospitals said: “I’m immensely proud of our dedicated, talented and compassionate staff and volunteers who go above and beyond daily to care for our patients and their families.

“Our shared and unwavering commitment to our quality improvement strategy Becoming the Best which launched last year is really starting to show results. The ‘Good’ rating from the CQC reflects the progress we are making and it’s encouraging to know that as independent regulators, the Care Quality Commission have been able to see this first-hand.

“We know we still have much to do to see improvement in some areas and the hard work does not stop here. We and our colleagues in the wider NHS locally will be using the findings of the CQC’s report to help us on our improvement journey and our focus on delivering caring at its best for every patient, every time continues.”

The CQC has noted several areas for improvement including notifying the Trust that it must take action to address:

Consistent levels of nurse staffing in line with Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Paediatric Nurse Standards, within services for children and young people
Waiting times from referral to treatment and arrangements to admit, treat and discharge patients in surgery in line with national standards
Patients review by consultant within 14 hours of admission
Appropriate level of national safeguarding training for all staff who provide care and treatment to under 18s.

John added: “Many of the improvements we have already delivered have been achieved against a backdrop of unprecedented demand and we will continue to work hard as a Trust and with our partners to deliver the very best care possible for our patients despite the challenges we face. We are already taking action to address the areas for improvement highlighted in the report and further improving safety is our number one priority.”
