Local tributes being paid to Duke of Edinburgh, who has passed away aged 99

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Loughborough's Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Allison paid tribute to Prince Philip. He said the University is, "saddened to hear today of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who dedicated his life to public service and whose support for Her Majesty The Queen was unwavering."

"Our thoughts and condolences are with The Queen and other members of the Royal Family at this time."

Dr Luke Evans, MP for Bosworth said, "Deeply saddened to hear news of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. He was a man who dedicated his life in service to Her Majesty the Queen, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."

Flags are flying at half-mast on buildings across the county.

The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr David Snartt, said: “This is a very sad day for our nation and on behalf of the borough of Charnwood, I would like to express our sincerest condolences to the Royal Family.

“The Duke of Edinburgh selflessly served our country for so many years and earned the respect of not just this nation, but of those around the world.

The Mayor of Hinckley & Bosworth, Cllr Lynda Hodgkins added,

“Now is a time for mourning, but we should remember the Duke with pride and affection.”

“We are all deeply saddened to receive the news of the death of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh. As consort to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch HRH Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh was deeply respected and admired throughout the world. On behalf of the elected members and all those who work for the Borough Council I would like to pass on my condolences to the Queen and all members of the Royal family at this very sad time. As a mark of respect, during the period of Royal mourning we will fly the union flag at half-mast across the Borough.”

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Michael Kapur OBE, said: “I am deeply saddened by the death of The Duke, who dedicated his life to the service of our country and to providing unwavering support to The Queen.

“I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to The Queen and all members of the Royal family at this very sad time.” 

The Chairman of the County Council, Pam Posnett MBE, said: “We are all deeply moved to hear of the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.  I speak on behalf of the elected members and those working for the County Council in expressing our collective sadness.

“As a mark of respect, the Union and County Flags have been half-masted at County Hall.”

She added: “I am profoundly saddened by the news of The Duke’s passing, and I wish to extend my sympathies to The Queen, who has lost her life-long loyal supporter and loving husband.”
