Residents in Charnwood are being urged to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day from the safety of their homes.

The borough council cancelled its programme of events planned to mark 75 years since the end of World War Two on Friday May 8th.

They are still encouraging residents to celebrate the occasion in their homes by displaying posters, bunting and hosting tea parties with a war time menu while continuing to follow social distancing guidelines.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, the Council’s Armed Forces Champion said: “Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic and in line with national guidance, we cancelled our programme of events to mark the occasion.

“Although it’s disappointing that we are unable to come together to pay tribute to the Second World War generation, it’s important for us to stay at home to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We know residents will still commemorate the occasion from the comfort of their homes and there are lots of resources available online to help people mark the anniversary. I would encourage everyone to get involved by joining the two minutes silence at 11am and hosting their own tea party in the safety of their own home while displaying bunting and posters.”
