There was a buzz in the council chamber at Charnwood recently after members were presented with pots of “Loughborough Gold” honey produced by the town’s university.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Allison attended a meeting of the full council to make the presentation which came about after a donation of a bee hive to the university.

Loughborough was presented with the hive by its twin town of Epinal in 2016 as they exchanged gifts to mark 60 years of twinning relations. Cllr David Gaskell was the Mayor of Charnwood at the time and he offered it to the university.

Two years later Prof Allison told councillors that the bees had produced 200lbs of honey and he was delighted to present them with jars of “Loughborough Gold”.

He said: “We thought it appropriate to present councillors with Loughborough Gold honey as it all started with a kind donation by Cllr Gaskell.  It was also an opportunity to thank the Council for its support to the university over the years.”

Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council, said: “The chamber really was buzzing thanks to this golden gesture by our friends at Loughborough University and we were delighted to see it has added another un-bee-lievable achievement to its already impressive record. Overall it’s a sweet story that will stick with us for a while.”

A pot of Loughborough Gold has also been sent to the town of Epinal.
