It is estimated that after 30 years, the woodland will have the potential to capture up to 1,323 tonnes carbon dioxide.

Over 1,700 trees have been planted by volunteers at Hathern Community Woodland.

The plan is for the trees to create a 15-acre woodland on council-owned land near to Golden Square.

Charnwood Borough Council recently announced it was planting around 14,500 trees and volunteers have been invited to help them meet this target.

Around 90 people took part in the sessions which were hosted by the Council’s open spaces partner idverde and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV).

Around 7,000 trees have been planted on site so far including those planted by the local community.

Cllr Jenny Bokor, the Council’s lead member for Loughborough and open spaces in Charnwood said: “It is fantastic so many residents got involved in the planting sessions. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time.

“I hope residents enjoyed helping to create a woodland which will be enjoyed by future generations. I would also like to thank idverde and TCV who ran the sessions which gave people the opportunity to take part.”

Hathern Community Woodland is also expected to contribute to the Council’s commitment to become Carbon Neutral by 2030.

It is estimated that after 30 years, the woodland will have the potential to capture up to 1,323 tonnes carbon dioxide.

The trees at Hathern Community Woodland are also being planted in support of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC).

Planting at the site is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
