144 new homes and a country park destined for Snibston Museum site in Coalville

Leicestershire County Council have officially submitted plans to build a housing estate and country park on the former site of Snibston Discovery Park in Coalville.

The plans include creating a heritage trai so people can learn about the former colliery as well as 144 new homes.

The museum was closed in 2015 because Leicestershire County Council said it could not afford to keep it open. The closure sparked protests among local people.

Council leader Nick Rushton said: "We’re committed to investment in Coalville and these plans celebrate Snibston’s mining history and make the country park more attractive to visitors. Bringing in more people is really key to the success of the site as additional income from the car park and visitor centre will make it sustainable."

Leicestershire County Council, which owns the land, has to get planning permission from North West Leicestershire District Council before it can sell the land to be developed.
