Have your say on plans to cut numbers of councils

People across Leicestershire are being encouraged to take part in a Government consultation on plans to reorganise local councils.

The proposals would see the county’s current ten councils including Hinckley and Bosworth and Charnwood Borough Council replaced by a smaller number of unitary authorities, each responsible for delivering all local services.

Leicestershire County Council would also go.

There are three bids for Leicestershire:

  • Leicestershire County Council’s bid would bring together Leicestershire and Rutland under a single council.
  • Local and Borough Councils bid is called North, City, South and involves splitting the county into three.
  • Leicester City Council proposed 2 unitary councils.

The Government is consulting on several different options, with residents invited to share their views before the consultation closes at the end of March.

Ministers are expected to decide on a final proposal later this year. If approved, the new council arrangements would be introduced in 2028.

Similar proposals have been put forward in Warwickshire which also affect Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and the consultation is available here:
