Ten chimneys at Beaumanor Hall near Woodhouse are being repaired as Leicestershire County Council carries out proactive work to protect the historic venue
Ten chimneys are being repaired at Beaumanor Hall as Leicestershire County Council looks to protect the future of the historic venue.
The work on the 175-year-old chimneys is expected to continue until October, with the hall remaining open for events throughout.
The council says the chimneys were not considered an immediate risk, but structural engineers recommended proactive repairs to help prevent potential problems in the future.
Beaumanor Hall, near Woodhouse, is a familiar destination for many people across Leicestershire. Aswell as hosting weddings, conferences and events, it is used by schools for outdoor education trips, with activities including climbing, archery, orienteering, high ropes and watersports.
The Grade Two-Star listed hall has an important place in the county's history. Built between 1842 and 1854, it was used as a secret listening station during the Second World War to intercept encrypted enemy signals.
Leicestershire County Council bought Beaumanor Hall in 1974 and says the latest repairs form part of its commitment to the long-term future of the site.
Councillor Kevin Crook, the council's cabinet member for heritage, said the building is "incredibly important for Leicestershire's history" and that the council is determined to see its full potential in the years ahead.
The hall will continue to welcome visitors and host events while the chimney repairs are carried out.
