A report will be presented to Council next week.

Charnwood Borough Council will consider launching two community governance reviews which could lead to the creation of a new town council for Loughborough and a new parish council in Broadnook in the south of the borough.

A report will be presented to Council on 8 September 2025.

The Council report says it is considering a town council for Loughborough due to the Government’s local government reorganisation plans which will see borough and county councils replaced with new unitary authorities.

Councillor Jewel Miah, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: “With the Government’s proposals for local government reorganisation, it’s important we consider how local representation can be maintained and strengthened in the future in Loughborough, the largest town in the county outside of the city.

“A town council for Loughborough and a parish council for Broadnook could play a vital role in ensuring residents, businesses and communities have a strong voice on shaping local services and the future of their areas.

“Community governance reviews are a thorough and statutory process, and there will be significant opportunities for people and organisations to have their say throughout."

If the reviews are approved by Council on 8 September, it is anticipated a consultation could begin later that month. Further consultation would be held next year, and the new town council and parish council could come into effect in 2027.
