County-wide call to 'step it up' and recycle more

Over 40 per cent of all household waste in Leicestershire is currently recycled.

Leicestershire County Council is asking residents to ‘step it up’ and recycle more to help tackle climate change.

Despite forty perecent of household waste making it to the recylcing bin, items such as used nappies and food waste are still being incorrectly disposed of in recycling bins.

During the awareness week, which runs until Sunday, 26 September, the council wants to inspire residents to make small changes, such as rinsing jars, tubs, and containers before recycling; recycling bottles and packets from the bathroom, or reusing plastic tubs for storage before recycling them.

These small measures can have a big impact on both the environment and climate change.

Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for environment and the green agenda, said: “As we are becoming more environmentally aware, Recycle Week 2021 is an important time to remind residents of what can and can’t be recycled.

“With the help of residents, we can improve the quality of Leicestershire’s recycling and reduce waste. Recycling right can make a huge difference and is a powerful action we can all take to make the county a cleaner, greener place to live and work, as well as help fight the climate crisis. This is all part of our commitment to being net zero by 2045.”
