An exhibition to commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War has opened at the Atkins Gallery.
The exhibition focuses on the stories of local soldiers and the various places across the globe where WWII was fought, as well as VE and VJ Day celebration images from the past and present.
All the items in the exhibition have been loaned by residents, including a collection of British Army standard issue jackets, hats and equipment. The largest object overlooking the whole exhibition is an original World War II White Naval Ensign flag.
Cllr Mark Bools, Deputy Leader of the Borough Council, said: "Having marked the 80th anniversaries of both VE and VJ Day, this exhibition is a fitting and fabulous conclusion to a truly historic year. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported it—especially our residents, who generously shared their precious mementos, photographs, and uniforms. I urge everyone to visit and take a moment to reflect on those who made it possible for us to live the lives we lead today.”
Atkins Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 9am until 5pm. There will be additional Saturday openings on 13 September (11:30am until 1:30pm) and 20 September (12:30pm until 1:30pm).
