The County Council want to hear from people with great recipes that include leftovers.

A new competition urging Leicestershire residents to reduce food waste has launched.

Leicestershire County Council is running the competition to inspire people to make the most out of the food they buy and to highlight what meals can be created from leftovers.

It is estimated that wasting food costs the average UK family more than £700 a year.

The recipes submitted need to include leftover ingredients, such as bread, milk and potatoes.

The winners will feature in a county-wide cookbook and could be in with a chance of winning £30 worth of Central England Co-op vouchers.

Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for the environment and the green agenda, said: " We’re delighted to have been supporting Food Waste Action Week for the third year running, and we’re tackling the issue head on by encouraging residents to take easy, everyday actions to help make the county a cleaner, greener place to live and work.

"Every person in Leicestershire can make a big difference by taking small steps to reduce food waste, such as planning meals and storing food correctly, which could save their family around £730 a year.

"I’m excited to see the recipes we get and I encourage you to take part in our competition and submit your own food creations made from leftover ingredients."

Recipes need to be submitted by 11.59 pm on Sunday 26th March.
