Man jailed for Barwell attack

The 29-year-old from Hinckley will serve a 14 month sentence for GBH.

A 29-year-old has been jailed after two people were hospitalised following an assault in Barwell.

Garnet Martin of Strathmore Road, Hinckley, pleaded guilty to two counts of Section 20 grievous bodily harm (GBH) when he appeared at court last month.

He was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court, to 14 months imprisonment for each count of GBH to run concurrently.

He was also given a five year restraining order.

The charges relate to an incident on 9th September 2015 when Garnet Martin entered an address in Bardon Road, where the occupants were attacked with weapons, including a baseball bat, a table and a metal pole. He left the scene shortly afterwards in a car which was parked outside.

The ambulance service and police were called to the scene by a neighbour when she witnessed one of the victims leave the address covered in blood and screaming for help.

Officers arrested Martin later the same day.

A 29-year-old woman and a man, 30, sustained head injuries in the attack and spent several days receiving treatment in hospital.

Detective Constable Anna Thorpe, the investigating officer said: “This was a particularly nasty assault for which the motive was unclear.

“We are pleased with today’s sentence and hope the result will help the victims to finally put the events of that day behind them.
