Man jailed for four years

A man who stabbed a person walking home in Broughton Astley on New Year's Day has been jailed.

31 year old James Green, of no fixed address, appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Monday 23 March where he pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of possession of a bladed article.

He was sentenced to four years for causing grievous bodily harm and 18 months for possession of a bladed article. He will serve the sentences concurrently, meaning a total sentence of four years.

At around 1 o'clock in the morning on New Year’s Day, the 47-year-old victim was walking home with friends after celebrating in Broughton Astley.

The group were on Main Street when Green approached and started shouting at them before walking off and entering a nearby address.

Green returned with a knife moments later and stabbed the victim in the back.

Police and the East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene and the victim was taken to the University Hospital in Coventry for treatment to a single stab wound. He was discharged hours later.

Detective Constable Simon Roberts, from the Complex Investigation Team, was the investigating officer. He said: “The victim was assaulted as he returned home after a night out with friends.

“He was stabbed in a seemingly unprovoked attack leaving him bleeding and requiring hospital treatment.

“Enquires commenced to find who was responsible and resulted in Green being arrested hours later, when he approached an officer on duty at the scene.”
