Petition to reopen Shepshed tip

The MP for Loughborough has started a petition to reopen Shepshed's recycling centre.

The site has been closed since early August, along with three other sites across Leicestershire due to national capacity issues. 

Leicestershire County Council extended the closure saying it update residents when the national picture improved. 

Jeevun Sandher, Labour MP has now written to Leicestershire County Council demanding that the site reopen for residents. 

He said: 

"I launched my petition for Leicestershire County Council to reopen Shepshed tip, and it's already had well over 500 signatures.
The tip is closed until further notice. Residents are having to take longer and costly journeys with their waste and I'm already hearing about fly-tipping. I wrote to the county council last week and I'm still waiting for a response. I'll also be asking to meet them to discuss what can be done to get the tip reopened.
Our community is speaking with one voice: you’ve raised council taxes, we deserve our services to be delivered. And with enough public pressure, we can make it happen." 

In a statement, Adam Tilbury, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste told Fosse 107:

"Nationally there is extraordinary pressure within the waste sector, and the site closures and capacity issues at treatment facilities has meant this knock-on impact on our waste sites. I know our teams are working extremely hard with these facilities to find solutions as quickly as possible. Their work has also meant eight other sites across the county can remain operational.
I appreciate how inconvenient situation is for some people and thank people for their patience whilst we work to restore services.”
