Swift police action deters unauthorised encampment

Encouraging signs for Council’s High Court Injunction

On the evening of Thursday May 30, police intercepted one occupier of a single caravan.

The occupant was in breach of the recently introduced high court injunction forbidding known individuals and persons unknown from occupying 141 areas of land within the boundaries of Nuneaton and Bedworth.

As an extra deterrent, yellow signs to highlight the high court injunction have been installed at all of the main road entrances into the Borough.

The land was privately owned land and the occupant was a named person covered by the injunction. A County Court date was arranged for the next morning but was not required as all occupiers left the County peacefully the same night in accordance with the injunction.

Cllr Chris Watkins, portfolio holder for Housing and Communities said:

"The matter was dealt with swiftly and with joint action by the Council and the Police we were able to remove an unlawful occupation of land within a short space of time and with minimal disruption to residents. I am so pleased that the injunction is working well and helping us to protect our green spaces across the Borough.

“The new signs that have been installed at key entrances to the Borough also make it clear to any visitors that there is a high court injunction in place, making an additional element to help deter future unauthorised encampments.”
