Millwall vs West Ham: London rivalry returns after 14-year wait with big Championship showdown at the Den

One of football's fiercest rivalries is back.

The infamous 'Dockers derby' has over 125 years of history but the 100th match-up between Millwall and West Ham on Saturday lunchtime is one of the most hotly anticipated.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder but after a 14-year wait since these two London clubs last faced off, expect that gap to only ramp up the atmosphere and intensity before and after the first whistle blows at 12.30pm at the Den, live on Sky Sports.

Last season ended in disappointment for both sides, with West Ham relegated from the Premier League and Millwall beaten in the Championship play-offs. But a consolation for both sets of supporters was the prospect of this first showdown since February 2012.

West Ham won that day at Upton Park and the visitors will be favourites to take the three points again when they visit their injury-hit hosts.

Nuno Espirito Santo's group may have been beaten by Premier League Fulham in the Carabao Cup in midweek but, with six changes made to the starting XI for that tie, that result is not a great guide for what to expect from the Hammers on Saturday.

Instead, look to their stunning run in the Championship over their past four league games. They've scored 16 times across that winning streak, with captain Jarrod Bowen looking a class apart at this level, with four goals and two assists in the run.

If table-topping West Ham are turning on the style, Millwall are scrapping, with double-figures in the treatment room.

A 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough was ultimately a positive point on Tuesday - but the concession of a two-goal lead was perhaps a reflection of a team suffering fatigue.

The Lions battled to the final whistle to hold on for a draw but the physical demands of covering for their absent team-mates has taken a toll on the players who have been repeatedly asked to go again.

There was similar spirit shown against Newcastle last week in the 1-0 Carabao Cup loss but keeping teams at bay in the Championship has been an issue in recent weeks with Millwall shipping 13 goals across their past five league games, with the solitary clean sheet against Bolton the exception.

The free-scoring Hammers will be optimistic of opening up that defence again.

But this game is the epitome of a 'formbook-out-of-the-window' fixture.

Millwall hold a narrow winning record across the 99 previous clashes and home advantage could also be significant. Millwall fans will hold memories of the 4-1 thrashing of West Ham in March 2004 when they head to the Den on Saturday. You have to go back to December 1988 for West Ham's last win at Millwall.

But expect the unexpected. Red cards in three of the past six meetings highlights how the atmospheres generated by these two fan groups can translate onto the pitch and bring unpredictability to these occasions.

It all adds to the anticipation, with the 100th chapter of the story of this famous fixture ready to be written.
