NBA Europe: Former Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy vying with Spurs owners to buy London-based team in new basketball league

Former Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is vying with a consortium including current Spurs' owners, the Lewis family, to buy NBA Europe's London-based team.

Sky News has revealed that the Lewises are part of a consortium, led by the Checketts family, which has submitted an offer as part of the ongoing auction.

The Checketts have owned or invested in professional sports franchises including Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake and the NHL's St Louis Blues.

The third leg of the consortium is the Eccles family, who own shares in Burnley FC and Spanish side Espanyol along with the Checketts.

Sky News has previously reported Levy's involvement in a consortium including Liberty Global and MSP Sports Capital, a former backer of McLaren Racing, which is also among the contenders for the NBA London team.

London has rapidly become most highly prized of the 12 new NBA Europe outfits, with other teams based in cities such as Berlin, Manchester, Milan, Munich, Paris and Rome.

The NBA wants to generate billions of dollars by selling the rights to the teams, with the first transactions expected in the coming weeks.

Wealthy US families and investors are increasingly buying stakes in sports teams in the UK, especially in football.

Levy left his role as Spurs executive chairman in September 2025 after nearly 25 years in the job.

While the official communication from Spurs and Levy was that he had "stepped down" from the role, it was widely understood that the decision was taken out of his hands.
