Reece James: Chelsea captain out for around three months after minor surgery on knee injury picked up in training

Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to be out for around three months after knee surgery.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury in training last Friday before Chelsea's 5-1 home win over Bournemouth.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso did not provide an exact timeline for James' return but it is understood the England international is set to be out until 2027.

Chelsea confirmed on Friday morning that James had undergone successful minor knee surgery.

When asked at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to Everton whether James' injury affected their January transfer window plans, Alonso said: "No, I don't think so because we expect for that time that he's back - some weeks before, some weeks [gestures other side] so let's see, it's not exact the timeline with him, so it doesn't affect [transfer plans]."

The Spaniard added on the injury: "We are all disappointed for him. He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but in the last training [session] he picked up an injury.

"We wanted to be cautious and wait to know the result of the tests, but now the surgery has gone well and has been successful. Keep supporting him.

"He'll be close to the team - he's a great influence. I wish him the best recovery. We don't set timelines, but he will be out for several weeks."

Who could be captain in James' absence?

James' injury also leaves the captain's armband up for grabs, which was taken by Levi Colwill in the win over Bournemouth.

Questioned on the captaincy, Alonso replied: "We have Moi (Caicedo), Levi; we have players that take that responsibility, and they fill the role in a perfect way.

"They have the support from the rest when they see them with the armband."

He added: "You can be captain without an armband. Once you wear it, you have to be proud and take responsibility.

"You can have leadership without it, and that's why we have this group of captains to be the ones to pull from the rest - not just on matchday but during the week they need to deal with that."

James has suffered multiple injuries throughout his career, and this is the latest setback that will keep him out of home games against Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as the trip to Manchester City.

He enjoyed a relatively injury-free campaign last season as he made 29 Premier League appearances, the most he made since the 2020/21 season.

It led to James being called up to England's World Cup squad, but he then suffered a hamstring injury at the tournament, which saw him miss three games.

James then recovered to start in the semi-final loss against Argentina.

The Chelsea academy graduate has made six appearances this season, including three Premier League starts.

In March, James signed a new six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Analysis: Burden on Caicedo becomes heavier

Sky Sports News' James Savundra reporting from Alonso's press conference:

"James' fresh injury represents a blow to Alonso but more so for the Chelsea captain. It's yet another setback for the highly talented but equally fragile 26-year-old.

"Our understanding is that James will be out for around three months. The Chelsea boss was reluctant to provide a timescale but seemed confident that he would return in time not to force their hand in the January transfer window.

"The latest setback for the skipper raises questions as to how Alonso can build a project involving James as a key component. History would sadly suggest that James' body will let him down in the future.

"Nonetheless, the Spaniard will continue to back his man: 'He's still a very important player. He's the captain; he's a great influence. Hopefully, after the recovery from his injury, he will be available for many games'.

"Publicly, the Spaniard suggests that James' latest injury will not impact their January transfer plans. Yet, despite no European football, Chelsea's midfield options will be stretched.

"Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia will be required to play a significant role in the coming months. The burden on the brilliant Moises Caicedo has just become heavier."
