New sculpture unveiled outside Earl Shilton library

A new sculpture of mosaics depicting the history of Earl Shilton has been unveiled outside the town's library.

Earl Shilton Library Community Mosaic Sculpture, which was unveiled on Saturday (25th April), is a vibrant new addition to the town, designed to celebrate both its rich history and the creative spirit of its residents. This lasting piece of art takes the shape of an open book and is adorned with a bespoke mosaic, brought to life with designs contributed by a diverse range of local voices.

The project was the result of a collaborative effort led by the Earl Shilton Library Working Group, who wanted to transform an empty planter outside the library into something both meaningful and visually striking. 

To ensure the sculpture truly reflected the heart of Earl Shilton, the Working Group hosted a series of interactive workshops throughout the spring. These sessions were designed to engage the local community in the creative process, inviting them to contribute their ideas, memories, and artistic talents.

The workshops attracted input from pupils at Townlands Primary School, members of Earl Shilton in Bloom and the Women's Institute.

The sculpture features many nods to the town's heritage including the life of Lady Byron, Earl Shilton as the home of the Pukka Pie and it's hosiery and boot making heritage. 

Local businesses were also involved in the project, including G Seller, which provided the granite book as well as the base for the memorial.
