River closed at Bradgate Park due to sewage leak

The River at Bradgate Park is closed while Severn Trent work on site.

Visitors to Bradgate Park are being urged to avoid the river after pollution caused by a burst sewage pipe contaminated the water.

Park officials have issued a public warning advising that there is "currently no access to the river" until further notice.

Families are asked to ensure that children and pets stay well away from the water due to potential health risks.

The pollution is believed to have been caused by a burst sewage pipe in the surrounding area.

In a statement to visitors, Bradgate Park Trust said water company Severn Trent is currently on site carrying out work to resolve the issue.

Visitors are encouraged to follow any temporary signage and safety instructions while the incident is dealt with.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said:

"Our teams have been working throughout the night in the Bradgate Park area following a burst wastewater pipe. The burst has now been stopped and our focus is on identifying the defect so we can carry out the required repair as quickly as possible.

“Traffic management, including two-way traffic lights, remains in place to allow our teams to work safely. We understand the concern this incident will cause for local residents and visitors, and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while this work continues."

A spokesperson for the park said:

"Please be aware that there is currently no access to the river at Bradgate Park due to pollution from a burst sewage pipe nearby. Please ensure children and pets are kept away from the water. Thank you." There is currently no indication of when access to the river will be restored. Further updates are expected once the clean-up has been completed and the water is deemed safe.
