At least 12 killed and hundreds injured in Saudi Arabia airport 'missile attack'

At least 12 have been killed and hundreds injured in strikes on the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, officials have said.

UK nationals were told to avoid the airport earlier in the day after the missiles strikes were reported.

The British embassy in Riyadh issued the advice saying there had been a "serious incident", and the US embassy also advised its citizens to stay away.

The airport was attacked again on Saturday and subsequently evacuated, two regional officials said; two days after three Saudi citizens including a pilot had been killed in another strike.

Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority reported the deaths and said 309 had been injured.

The 12 people killed include four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, one American, one Egyptian, one Jordanian, one Syrian, one Palestinian and one Sudanese national, the authority said.

One regional official said earlier a missile had struck two domestic terminals and many had been wounded. They were speaking on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorised to speak to the media.

US President Donald Trump told reporters he was weighing up whether the US should join Saudi strikes on the Houthis following the recent spate of attacks.

"We may. We're going to look at it," he said. "We just found out about the recent attack. So we'll make a decision. We move very quickly."

King Khalid International Airport has been targeted multiple times this week, after a Saudi-led coalition launched a major military offensive against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the earlier attacks, including one on Wednesday that killed a Sudanese national.

There was no immediate Houthi statement on Saturday.

Recent attacks on airports, military facilities and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, has upset markets and the region, as the disruption from the Iran conflict spreads.

The Saudi government-run Centre for International Communication, which oversees foreign media in the kingdom, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

More than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing towards the airport on Saturday. A Riyadh resident, Ahmed Sayed, said he had heard at least two loud explosions in the capital.

Flights to Riyadh were diverted elsewhere, after the last flight landed at 2.05pm, according to the Flightradar24 tracker.

Kuwait Airways said it was canceling flights because the airport had closed. Canada's embassy advised citizens to avoid all travel to the airport, noting "ongoing military activity".
