Police investigating disappearance of US TV presenter Savannah Guthrie's mother

The disappearance of US TV host Savannah Guthrie's mother is being investigated, authorities have said.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home near Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday at around 9.30pm. The 84-year-old was reported missing by her family on Sunday after she did not attend church, according to police.

On Monday, Chris Nanos, the Pima County sheriff, said: "We don't see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene."

Police believe she was abducted from her home while she slept, CBS reported.

Savannah Guthrie is a co-anchor on the NBC News morning show Today on US television.

Mr Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and that there were signs indicating she did not leave on her own.

"This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene," Mr Nanos said.

He added that she lived alone, was of sound mind and requires daily medication.

"This is not dementia related," he said.

"She's as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn't someone who just wandered off."

Mr Nanos did not provide further details but urged people in the community "to step up and start giving us some calls".

Monday's broadcast of the Today show began with an update on Ms Guthrie's disappearance.

In a statement, Savannah Guthrie - who was absent from the show - thanked people for their continued support.

"On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support," she said.

"Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy."

Nancy Guthrie is described as being 5ft 5in tall, weighing 150lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes, according to her missing person's profile.
