Shooting at Dallas immigration centre investigated as act of 'targeted violence'

Ammunition recovered from the scene of a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas was engraved with the phrase ANTI ICE, the FBI has said.

It is being investigated as an act of "targeted violence", the bureau added.

Four people were shot and one has died, police said. The attacker also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dallas FBI Special Agent Joseph Rothrock said it was a "coordinated attack" and "just the most recent example we've seen of targeted violence".

Early evidence suggested the incident was "anti-ICE in nature", he added.

A recovered, unspent shell casing was engraved with the phrase ANTI ICE, said FBI director Kash Patel.

Multiple rounds were fired just before 7am local time, he said.

An initial review of evidence shows an "ideological motive behind this attack", he added, describing the attack as "despicable".

The "whole of government" will respond, Mr Rothrock said.

"There will be no resource not utilised to bring all those individuals who are responsible to justice and to hold them accountable."

No police officers had been hurt, Mr Rothrock added.

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, said the shooting would "NOT slow our arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants".

He added: "We will work with ICE and the Dallas Police Department to get to the bottom of the assassin's motive."

The attacker was found on the roof of a nearby building, local ABC affiliate WFAA reported, citing sources.

"Preliminary information is a possible sniper," ICE acting Director Todd Lyons told CNN.

The field office is where people are processed and where agents decide whether to release individuals or hold them, according to ICE.

The victims were being led into the building to be processed and repatriated, Fox News reported, citing Dallas police Department sources.

The attacker fired multiple rounds from a nearby roof or elevated position near the field office's secure entryway, an ICE spokesperson said.

It is not clear yet what the suspect's target was. The shooter struck only detainees, but the spokesperson said it remained unclear whether they were targeting those detainees.

Dallas Police Department said in a statement they responded to a call at around 6.40am local time (12.40pm UK time) in the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway.

Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds, and one died at the scene, police said.

Police added that the investigation was ongoing and a media briefing will take place later today.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in an X post that there were multiple injuries and fatalities, and the attacker was dead.

Replying to Noem, US Vice President JD Vance wrote: "The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop.

"I'm praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families."

No ICE agents were shot or hurt, Sky News' US partner network NBC reports, and it is unclear what Mr Vance was referring to by "attack on law enforcement".

Despite the reports that no ICE agents were shot, US Attorney General Ken Paxton said: "We will continue to do everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals."
