A 20-year-old woman has died while kayaking in the River Tees in Barnard Castle, police have said.
Her body was pulled from the river on Saturday afternoon, after multiple emergency services were called to the scene.
"We were called to reports of concern for a kayaker who had got into difficulty in the river just before 2pm," Durham police said in a statement.
The woman's body was recovered two hours later.
The search operation involved the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service, the Coastguard, and the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.
