999 calls rise after England exit World Cup

Leicestershire Police issued a warning as England bowed out of the World Cup after defeat to Croatia.

Leicestershire Police said it received a high number of 999 calls following England’s World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia. 

After the full-time whistle, Gold Commander, Superintendent Alistair Roe said: “It is proving to be another extremely busy night for Leicestershire Police and while the majority of fans celebrated – and commiserated - sensibly tonight, a minority have not which places increased and unnecessary additional demand on police and other emergency responders.

“We were and continue to be prepared for tonight with additional policing resources and officers and staff continue to respond to this increased demand. On behalf of the force, I urge members of the public to think about their actions tonight and the effect it has on others.

“As the force experiences this high demand of calls this evening, I appeal to the public to only call 999 in circumstances of real and genuine emergency.”
