East Midlands Airport says its withdrawn its campaign after complaints online.

East Midlands Airport has withdrawn an offer asking local musicians to perform for passengers for free, after it caused outrage on social media.

The airport has been accused of trying to exploit musicians by saying staff would 'look after them' but they would not be paid for their work.

The regional branch of the musicians union got involved in the debate and is now working with the airport.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport said: “The invitation we issued to local musicians to perform in our departure lounge over the autumn was in no way designed to undermine the skill, hard work and professionalism that is required to perform in public. We apologise for any upset caused.

"We have contacted the regional office of the Musicians’ Union (MU) and are working with them to agree how best to proceed. In the meantime, we will discontinue our promotion."

“Thank you to all those who have contacted us expressing a desire to perform at the airport.”
