Charnwood Borough Council has cancelled this year’s Charnwood Sports Awards because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The annual awards, which take months of planning, celebrate the achievements of sports clubs, individual athletes, coaches and volunteers across the borough.
The council says taking into account the restrictions on events and in the interest of keeping people safe, this year’s awards have been cancelled.
The coronavirus has meant that many sports and activities have had to be put on hold during recent months, but the awards will return to celebrate sporting achievements next year.
Councillor Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for communities said: “The Charnwood Sports Awards has been a key item in the Council’s calendar of events for the past 12 years but unfortunately due to the current restrictions around social distancing and with many sports and activities being put on hold for most of the year, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 awards.
“The pandemic has had a tough impact on our sporting stars across the borough however Charnwood Sports Awards will come back next year where we will be able to celebrate sporting achievements together like in previous years.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those groups and individuals who have adapted during the pandemic to deliver online activities to help people stay active while at home during lockdown.”
The Charnwood Sports Awards will return in December 2021 and more information will be available next year.
