Council wards in Nuneaton and Bedworth could be changing

"We would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions."

Residents are being asked to have their say on the proposals to change the council wards in Nuneaton and Bedworth.

The Local Government Boundary Commission is reviewing Nuneaton and Bedworth to make sure the councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and that the ward arrangement helps make the council work effectively.

A 10-week consultation on the proposals will run until 10 April 2023.

The Commission has published proposals for changes to Nuneaton and Bedworth and it suggests that there should be 38 councillors and two councillors per ward.

If this happens then most of the wards' boundaries will be changed.

Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We want people in Nuneaton and Bedworth to help us.

“We have drawn up proposals for new wards in Nuneaton & Bedworth. We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities. We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.

“Residents and local organisations can help us do that. We would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions."

Proposed changes include:

• Amendments to the boundaries in Bedworth to better reflect community identity

• Significant changes to ward boundaries in the northeast of the borough, as there has been significant development in the area and more is likely to occur in the near future.

Cllr Kristofer Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “With the level of development that has taken place in our Borough over the past 10 years and the forecast increase in population by 2028, it is vital that we ensure equal representation for all our residents.

"This is the bedrock of our democracy. With the last review taking place over 20 years ago in 1999, the review will ensure local democracy is fit for the future.

“I would encourage residents to review the proposals and submit their views to the independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England.”

The Commission has a dedicated section on its website where people can see the detail of the proposals and comment on the names of wards, their boundaries and the number of councillors per ward.
