National Highways has extended its consultation on proposed improvements to the busy A5 Gibbet Hill junction near Lutterworth. Residents and businesses now have until November 17th to give their views.

National Highways is asking for public feedback on plans to improve the A5 Gibbet Hill junction, where the A5 and A426 meet near Lutterworth.

The roundabout is a known congestion hotspot, with concerns that traffic will increase further as major developments, including Magna Park and new housing around Lutterworth and Rugby, put additional pressure on the road network.

National Highways says the junction is part of a key UK freight corridor, carrying both long-distance and local traffic. It is also used as a diversion route for the M1 and M6.

The highways authority says congestion can affect nearby villages, including Shawell, while journey times can be unreliable because of high traffic volumes and slow-moving vehicles.

Other issues identified include vehicles overrunning verges, restricted visibility on two arms of the roundabout and poor pedestrian access near the services.

The proposed improvements aim to make journeys more reliable, improve safety and strengthen the road network's ability to cope with disruption, while supporting economic growth in the region.

Local businesses and councillors have described improvements as long overdue, with calls for any changes to take account of future development and traffic levels.

The scheme is due to undergo further development and assessment between 2026 and 2031, with construction planned beyond 2031. However, National Highways says taking part in the current process does not guarantee that the scheme will be built.

How to have your say

National Highways has extended the consultation by two weeks. It will now close at 11.59pm on Tuesday, November 17th, 2026.

An online webinar will also take place on Tuesday, November 3rd, at 6pm, giving people the opportunity to view the consultation materials and speak to the project team.

Anyone wishing to attend should register by emailing A5GibbetHill@NationalHighways.co.uk.

The consultation materials and details of how to respond are available on the National Highways website: https://nationalhighways.citizenspace.com/he/a5-gibbet-hill-consultation/
