Student Council pupils from Saint Peter’s Primary School with Dr Luke Evans, MP for Bosworth

Pupils from Saint Peter’s Primary School met Dr Luke Evans MP, to discuss their concerns about crossing London Road.

Student Council pupils from Saint Peter’s Primary School in Hinckley have shared their worry about crossing London Road as there is currently no designated crossing spot.

A petition, which has nearly 7,000 signatures, has been started to install a permanent crossing on the road.

The school’s student council team questioned MP, Dr Luke Evans and asked

‘As children we are not old enough to vote.  How do you as an MP know what the children of the area want?’

‘We are asking for a crossing for the whole area, not just us.  We have been told by the council that drivers might forget a crossing is there if it isn’t used very often, but we don’t agree – what do you think?’

‘We know you can see the road from your office.  People have reported some near misses, so it is really just a matter of time before the worse happens.  How would you feel if one of us were badly injured or worse, trying to get to school.  We know this is a hard question to answer but these are real worries that we have, every day.’

Dr Luke Evans has agreed to support their campaign and said he will contact the local council about the issue.

When Fosse 107 spoke to parents about their concerns one parent said: "I witnessed a serious near-miss with one of the children crossing the road, if it hadn't been for his parents he would most certainly have been hit by a vehicle."

Another parent said: "Every day is a day where pupils and parents are exposed to the dangers of the unsafe crossing."

Saint Peter's Catholic Primary School used to have a crossing patrol person to help the children cross safely however, although advertising for the role no one has come forward.
