A Hinckley woman has been recognised by Parkinson’s UK for her commitment to supporting people living with the condition.

Katie Puddefoot has developed a website, run events and made sure those affected across the East Midlands have access to Parkinson’s research opportunities.

Katie's father Mark has Parkinson's and she has been inspired by the people she has met to pursue a career in neuroscience.

She is now studying at university to become a researcher to help find a cure for Parkinson's.

John Turner, Chair of the East Midlands Research Interest Group, said: “Katie knew it was vital for people with Parkinson's to access good information about research and get involved in studies. She developed the RIG website and organises their research events, chairing the Q&A sessions and helping to find the best speakers. Thanks to her volunteering, more people in the East Midlands now access good quality research information and are given the chance to meet scientists working on a cure for Parkinson's. She is very enthusiastic and a real asset to the group.”

It is estimated 145,000 people are currently living with Parkinson's in the UK.

There are more than 40 potential symptoms, such as lack of sleep, anxiety and stiffness, which can be hugely debilitating and impact everyday tasks.

Emma Cooper, Interim Director of Community and Participation at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do across all areas of the charity's work. We had almost 100 nominations this year, which shows how creative, driven and vital volunteers are to the Parkinson’s community. I’d like to thank Katie for everything she does, in her own time, to support people affected by Parkinson's."
