Hollycroft Park or Argents Mead?

Two parks in Hinckley are up against each other to be named among the most popular national green spaces.

Two parks in Hinckley are up against some of the best parks in the country to find that nation's favourite green spaces. 

Both Hollycroft Park and Argents Mead are competing in the online People's Choice Award, which gives the public the power to decide the top 10 parks from the 1,797 Green Flag Award sites.

Hollycroft Park is a 1930s park which has retained many of its original features. The bandstand hosts a number of events throughout the year, and the park offers a number of other facilities including tennis courts, pitch and putt and a bowling green. The park is also maintained as a site of horticultural excellence, with a number of different habitats including wildflower areas, as well as the more traditional bedding plant areas.

Much of the current Argents Mead site was once part of Hinckley Castle, which is known to have been existence from the mid 12th century and the remains are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Argents Mead is located within a Conservation Area and has connections with the adjacent 14th century Grade II* Listed St Mary's Church. The park itself contains the town's two war memorials - a traditional column and a separate stone relief – which are both Grade II Listed structures.

Voting closes at noon on Saturday 30 September. The winners will be announced in October.

Councillor Mark Nickerson, the Borough Council’s Executive member for Neighbourhood Services added: “What a wonderful achievement for both parks, showing that all the hard work by the Borough Council's ground staff, assisted by the Friends of Hollycroft for that park, really does pay. Your vote really matters too, so please vote for both parks to show your appreciation."

Last year saw tens of thousands of people voting for their favourite park, with winners coming from all across the UK, from London to Lanarkshire.
