Plans for crematorium in Hinckley

Council to ask residents on Leicester Road for views about the new facility.

Plans for Hinckley to have a crematorium on the A47 are progressing.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council say they will consult residents on plans for the new facility on Leicester Road, after a feasibility assessment for a crematorium on a site owned by the council was carried out late in 2017. 

It would mean that families in Hinckley would not need to travel to Nuneaton, the closest crematorium to the town. The council believe it would also result in reduced waiting times for services and reduced traveling times for Hinckley and Bosworth residents.

The feasibility study concluded there is sufficient demand for a crematorium at this location, noting that housing growth is estimated to further increase the demand for cremations in the next few years.

A consultation will give residents an opportunity to comment on the proposal before a formal planning application is submitted.

Council Leader, Cllr Mike Hall, said: "With over 70% of people choosing cremations over a burial this is an important service for us to provide locally.

Maintaining cemeteries can be very expensive, but operating a crematorium could actually produce a profit for the council, and every penny of that would be ploughed back into improving local services."
