Safe accommodation in the borough

Following the tragic event at Grenfell Tower in London, Nuneaton and Bedworth council reassures residents that the they do not have any high rise accommodation within Nuneaton and Bedworth.

The Council has 2 blocks of flats at Niton Road and Carisbrook Road, where external insulation cladding has been fitted.  All other flats or older person’s complexes owned by the Council do NOT have external insulation cladding fitted.  

Whilst the cause and contributing factors to this terrible fire have yet to be confirmed, there is much debate in the media in relation to the external insulation cladding that was fitted to Grenfell Tower.   The Council can confirm that in relation to the programme to install external insulation to both Council and private houses across areas of the borough, all materials used are of a different specification to that fitted to Grenfell Tower.  This specification has been approved by the British Board of Agrement and has undergone rigorous testing by the Building Research Establishment.  It fully complies with current building regulations requirements.  All external rendering to these properties has utilised a fire retardant material.   

The Council has a robust fire management protocol and the fire risk assessments for the flats at Niton Road and Carisbrook Road are currently being reviewed again.  Our instructions to residents in these flats remains the same – in the event of a fire, leave the building as quickly as possible.  Visits are being undertaken to the residents of these properties for reassurance and to reiterate this instruction.  The Council is in contact with Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and dialogue is ongoing.

For residents who have privately purchased external cladding, this cladding would be required to comply with current building regulations.  However, should you remain concerned, please contact your installer for further information.

The Council will continue to monitor and respond to any findings and  or recommendations that may emerge from any investigations or Public Inquiry that is undertaken.  

They regularly remind everyone to test their smoke alarms and would urge every household across the borough to do this at least every 6 months.
