A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to hospital after a car collided with a number of pedestrians in Clackmannanshire.

Three others - including an eight-year-old boy and two women - were also taken to hospital after a 70-year-old man driving a grey Kia Ceed struck them in Alloa's Clackmannan Road at around 2.40pm on Sunday.

The incident occurred along a stretch of road that has been closed for resurfacing works.

Sky News understands the collision happened next to Alloa Athletic FC's Indodrill Stadium.

A bloody tissue along with discarded hankies and bandages could be seen at the scene.

As the roadworks continue, one worker told Sky News: "I hope the boy is okay. Hopefully it's not too bad."

Police Scotland said the 12-year-old was airlifted to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. His condition was described as serious.

A 43-year-old woman was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) with minor injuries and was released following treatment.

An eight-year-old boy and an 81-year-old woman were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital (FVRH) and released following treatment.

The driver of the car was also taken to hospital to be checked over by medics.

Wider road closures between the Morrisons roundabout and Shillinghill roundabout were put in place while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

That section eventually reopened at about 8.45pm following crash investigation work.

The roadworks closure remains in place, stretching from the bottom of Clackmannan Road at Forth Valley College up to The Wasps' football stadium.

Drivers with local knowledge of Alloa's streets have been using nearby Hawkhill Road to bypass the closed section. However, the crash appears to have happened along the cordoned-off stretch of Clackmannan Road.

Inspector David Marr said: "Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are appealing to anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

"If you were driving in the area around the time, particularly just before the incident happened, then please check any dashcam you have in case something has been captured that could help with our investigation."
