China: Eight killed and 38 trapped following coal mine accident

At least eight people have been killed and 38 others are trapped following a coal mine accident in northern China.

It happened late on Friday night, according to the Xinhua news agency, and it is believed 247 workers were underground at the time.

Reports suggest that carbon monoxide levels had exceeded safe limits at the site in Changzhi City.

It is believed that some of those who remain trapped in the Liushenyu coal mine are in a critical condition.

Intensive rescue efforts under way, with more than 200 people brought to safety.

The cause of the accident is under further investigation.
