The same event took place in June.

In previous years the event has caused congestion on the A5 as hundreds of visitors come to the fair. There has also been concern from locals about problem behaviour.

But police praised attendees of the last fair for causing little trouble and working with them.

At the time Inspector Matt Oswin, Neighbourhood Policing Area Commander for Charnwood, said: “Thank you to all those who have worked with us and co-operated with us across the past few days of the horse fair as well as during the past four months as we assisted with planning and preparing for the fair.

“This includes the organisers of the fair, attendees at the fair, the local community and our partners as well as our own policing officers and staff.

“Everyone worked extremely hard to ensure the fair was held successfully. Work was also carried out in relation to traffic management and it was very positive to see that no concerns in relation to traffic issues were reported this year."

There were still reports of problems regarding anti-social behaviour and vandalism, as well as litter being left behind. Comments on Facebook show locals are now apprehensive about the latest fair going ahead.

Regarding the latest event, Charnwood Police said, "The event takes place on land that is privately-owned, and it is therefore the responsibility of the event organisers to decide if the event goes ahead and to manage the event.

"Leicestershire Police is working with partners, including Charnwood Borough Council, to liaise with the event organisers, the landowner, local residents and businesses in the lead up to the event, to assist with planning and to help with minimising the impact to traffic and local communities.

"Police and the council continue to monitor the situation in the lead up to the event and police officers will be carrying out high visibility patrols in the area during the day and night across the four days to engage, to offer reassurance and to respond to any incident should it be required. If you see us, please come and say hello and have a chat with us."
