A burglar has been jailed for two years after being identified by blood left at the scene of his crime.

Dean Foster, 42, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Monday 6 April.

On 16 March, he pleaded guilty to one count of burglary and one count of going equipped for theft at Leicester Magistrates’ Court.

It happened in Trackside Close, Loughborough, sometime between Christmas Eve and 27 December last year.

Foster smashed a window in order to get inside the property, cutting himself in the process.

Nothing was taken from inside the house, but a hammer and garden trowel were taken from the shed.

When officers visited the scene, they found blood on the wall, which was forensically linked to Foster by police and he was declared a suspect.

Detective Constable Sarah Hogan, the officer in the case, said: “We were able to take a sample from blood found on the wall of the property and identified that it belonged to Dean Foster.

“Last month, he was arrested in Loughborough. When he was found, he was in possession of two screwdrivers and charged with burglary and going equipped for theft.

“He has previous convictions for offences of a similar nature and I hope the people of Loughborough can take some reassurance that he has been jailed.”

Sergeant James Thomas, from the Charnwood Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) added: “The fact that Foster has been jailed will provide much respite for the residents of central Loughborough. He is a prolific offender and a great deal of effort was made by officers across different departments in Charnwood in order to bring him to justice.

"We take crimes such as burglary extremely seriously and even in the current climate, we will remain in the community dealing with those people who cause harm."
