Did you know the first ever Lionesses home game was held in Nuneaton?

A commemorative plaque has been unveiled in Nuneaton to mark the Lionesses first home fixture in 1973.

The match took place at the former home ground of Nuneaton Borough, on Manor Park, on Saturday 23rd June 1973, against Scotland. 

Seven players from the 1973 squad were at the Jubilee Sports Ground on Thursday (16 April) to see a plaque unveiled. 

England beat Scotland 8-0 in that match, with Pat Firth scoring a hatrick on her debut. 

The Manor Park ground was demolished in 2008 and was developed into a housing estate, but the plaque was installed at the local ground where girls football teams play. 

The plaque now stands as a permanent reminder of Nuneaton’s place in football history.

The unveiling is part of a week of celebrations leading up to England Women's 500th competitive international match against Iceland.
