Local Community helps Barwell Father and Son stuck in Thailand

Kenny Nettleton, who is his father Ken’s sole carer, travelled to Thailand to fulfil what was believed to be one of his dad’s final wishes — a chance to return and create lasting memories together. The pair spent five weeks abroad enjoying their time, but the trip took a sudden and serious turn when Ken’s health deteriorated.

Ken has already endured significant hardship in recent years, including the loss of another son six years ago, alongside ongoing health struggles. Kenny, a full-time worker and father himself, has long been dedicated to caring for his dad — even renovating a bungalow to make it suitable for them to live together more comfortably.

Friends say the trip was a “risk taken out of love”, giving Ken one more opportunity to experience something special.

However, without travel insurance in place, the situation has quickly become financially overwhelming. The costs of hospital treatment, extended accommodation, visa extensions, daily living expenses, and eventual flights home are continuing to mount.

Despite the challenges, there is hope. Ken is believed to have a chance of recovery and returning to the UK — but it will require time, care, and ongoing financial support.

In response, friends and members of the local community launched a fundraising campaign, which has already raised over £9,000. The appeal highlights Kenny’s unwavering commitment to his father and the difficult position the family now faces.

One supporter involved in organising the fundraiser on GoFundMe said:

“I’ve seen first-hand how much Kenny does for his dad. He’s been working so hard to make life better for him. This trip meant everything to them both — and now they just need a bit of help to get through this.”

The fundraiser remains open, with organisers urging anyone who can contribute — no matter how small — to help bring Ken and Kenny safely home.
