Meeting called over no-confidence vote

Fourteen councillors on Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council have supported a no-confidence vote in the Labour leader.

It's after Councillor Chris Watkins, who is also the Labour leader, wrote to the government requesting a delay to this May's local elections. 

The Conservatives, Greens and Liberal Democrat councillors say the elections should take place as planned. 

A extraordinary meeting of the full council will now take place on Wednesday 21st January to discuss the leadership of the Council. 

The motion, put forward by the Leader of the Opposition, Councillor K. Wilson states:

"The letter of the Leader of the Council dated 5 January 2026 to request a delay for the elections in Nuneaton and Bedworth fundamentally undermines the rights of the residents of our Borough in a way that surpasses normal disagreements over policy.

Therefore, this Council resolves that it has no confidence in the Leader of the Council and calls for his immediate removal from office." 

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council are in no overall control but Labour are the majority political party.

The seats are allocated as follows:

• Labour - 18 seats
• Conservative - 17 seats
• Green - 2 seats
• Liberal Democrats - 1 seat

The meeting will take place at 6pm.
