Five killed and 40 injured as Dutch tour bus overturns in Swiss Alps

Five people have been killed and 40 others injured in a Dutch tour bus crash in eastern Switzerland, police said.

The vehicle overturned between the villages of Susch and Zernez in the Alpine canton of Graubuenden on Thursday afternoon and rescue teams responded to the scene, authorities said.

According to Swiss media, 48 people were on the bus.

A spokeswoman for ANVR, a Dutch travel industry association, told the Blick newspaper that the passengers were all from the Netherlands.

Pictures from the scene published ⁠by the Swiss newspaper showed a bus on its ⁠side surrounded by helicopters and emergency response vehicles.

A police spokesperson said no other vehicles were believed to be involved.

Several ambulances and five helicopters were deployed to the location, according to Swiss media.

Oad, a travel agency behind the trip, said that it was "deeply shocked and devastated by the tragic bus accident".

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said it was too early to confirm the number of victims.

Swiss president Guy Parmelin posted on X: "My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. I offer my sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

"I am very grateful for the efforts of the first responders. The relevant Swiss authorities will ensure that a comprehensive and thorough investigation is carried out to establish all the circumstances surrounding this accident."
