Flood and landslide warnings as typhoon approaches Tokyo

Flood and landslide warnings are in place as a powerful typhoon approaches Tokyo.

Typhoon Dujuan is expected to pass close to the Japanese capital's metropolitan area on Monday amid warnings the extreme conditions will deteriorate rapidly.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest level five "emergency" alert for extreme conditions in Oshima in the Izu islands, which is around 65 miles south of Tokyo, while many other areas in eastern Japan faced level four "urgent" warnings.

More than 1.6 million people have reportedly been told to evacuate their homes.

Hundreds of flights were reported to have been impacted by the weather, with passengers facing potential cancellations, delays and diversions.

Japan Airlines warned passengers "many flights are being affected" due to the conditions, while All Nippon Airways told people using their services to check for updates "frequently".

Heavy rain has already drenched the Izu Islands and parts of Japan's Pacific coast.

Some locations have recorded more than 300mm (12ins) of rain since Saturday.

The JMA said downpours could intensify as the typhoon closes in on many areas, including Tokyo.

The authorities said that "linear rain bands" could form across central Japan, sharply raising the risk of flash floods and other rain-related disasters.

Linear bands, which have become a growing concern in Japan in recent years, can dump extraordinary amounts of rain over a narrow area for several hours.
